Institutional logo research (Mainstream)

Before creating our logo we wanted to put some research towards other institutional logos by analysing their use of colours, shapes and font to see how it drew its audience into the film.

We began by looking at mainstream institutional logos, starting with Universal Pictures.

universal studios logo

Universal Pictures' logo contains a variety of features, specifically the planet and stars, to both relate to the main "Universal" title as well as being commonly recognised images of planet Earth in  setting of space. The dark space background contrasting with the variety of colours of Earth draws in the viewer's eye towards the centre of the image, where the logo title is, making the overall logo more eye-catching to its audience. The main title itself of the logo uses a simple but recognisable font, meaning the viewer can see clearly what the text says without struggling to read it. As well as this the text is white coloured with gold plating behind it, the white being a clash with the darker coloured background to make the text more noticeable and the gold as a reflection on the company's power being within 'the big six', because gold gives generally connotations of power and richness.

The second logo we looked at was that of Walt Disney Studios

Despite their changes in logo design, most of the Walt Disney logo's contain the tunnelled castle background. This has been used to effectively portray the company's young film audience as most of their films are aimed at or aged for audiences younger than 12. The castle (particularly with the spired towers) surrounded by stars is strongly associated with what we see in children's fairy tales such as Cinderella, which in Disney's animated version the castle itself is featured as the palace where she meets the prince, inspiring its use in the more modern logos of the company. Overall the background image also contains a large mixture of colours also making it more appealing to its young audience. The logo's text uses the original creator's signature and in modern versions is chrome coloured, giving the same effect as universal's gold plated logo.
