Audience Questionnaire and how it would help us within the group
We were asked to collect research on what audiences would like to see and/or want from Genres, for this exercise I have chosen to ask mainly about 'Drama' and 'Horror' because we are doing a hybrid drama genre, and horror is a well known genre.
I have given my final questionnaire to 14+ persons of different ages and genders so I can get a better set of results to understand how, when we come to make our film opening, and how we can understand demographics of our target audience to create a film opening that would make them want to watch the rest of the film.
Here are the questions that i asked.
1. How old are you?
2. What Genres are your favourite?
3. What Genres are your least favourite?
4. What would you expect from a 'Fantasy' genre of film?
5. What audience members would you expect to go and see a fantasy genre of film?
6. What do you expect from a 'horror' genre of film?
7. what audience members would you expect to go and see a fantasy genre of film?
8. what was the last film that you saw in the cinema?
9. did you enjoy that film?
From the 14+ people that i asked, i was able to draw up my results.
1. four were 16 seven were 17 and three were 18
2. 3 picked animation, 2 picked sci-fi, 3 picked fantasy, 4 picked drama, 3 picked horror, 5 picked comedy, 4 picked musical, 2 picked action and 2 picked romance.
3. 1 picked animation, 3 picked sci-fi, 3 picked fantasy, 5 picked drama, 2 picked horror, 1 picked comedy 6 picked musical, 4 picked romance 2 picked action.
4. Gnomes, Vibrant settings and over the top characters, wizards, pixies, magic, cartoon, fairies, mystery, unicorns, action, good storyline, witches, pumpkins, toadstools.
5. 6 said Young children (8-12), 6 said young teenagers (13-18) and 2 said adults (19 onwards)
6. Blood, suspense, death and suspense, to be scared behind the sofa, scary parts, crazy music, jump scares, gory make-up, good storyline, murder, lots of violence, screaming, a good bay guy, tension
7. None said younger children (8-12), 10 said young teenagers (13-18), and four said adults (19 onwards)
8. 5 had seen the Lego Movie, 1 has seen The Hunger Games, Catching fire, 2 had seen Mr Peabody and Sherman, 3 had seen The Hobbit, desolation of Smaug, and 3 had seen Frozen.
9. All 14 said they enjoyed the film the saw.
This would help us when creating our media product because it will allow us to understand the audience demand of what they would like to see, so then we can apply that when creating our own in order to attract the audience that we desire, eg. our chosen audience later explained within another post.

Chosen genre and run up of further events
Within our group we have decided to chose the genre of Road Movie which follows the journey of a character or characters who embark on a journey both physically and mentally to a location, as they personally improve their character through self discovery.
With more research we plan to develop ideas on this sub -genre within the dominant genre of Drama, meaning we need to look at audience expectations for the genre. As we are a small group, our time management is a crucial to ensure that we are on track with our work, and also our trail of thought.
We have recently divided the group blogging requirements in order to ensure a fair coverage of work between our group.

Chosen Institution
As a group we have chosen to be an Independent film company because it allows us to explore our chosen genre 'Road Drama' as we would only be targeting a smaller, yet precise audience.
With this we have decided to be called 'Phoenix Productions' and when we come to making our two minute film opening, we have decided to have 'Small Talk Pictures' as one of our helping institutes, because it is rather unlikely for an independent company to have enough money from their own back to produce a film.

Our Narrative Idea in Three Different Genres
Here are some mind maps of our narrative idea (Alex's mother dying, Alex leaving his home town, meeting Amy Steelman, and then dying himself) with some conventions that are to be seen in the genres I have chosen to re-create, for example, within the horror genre I have added an escaped mad man to then seek Alex's death.

Shining Remake (Video)
By filming this re-make we were able to understand how titles are important, and also where they are placed is important. This also allowed us to understand that when we come to create our own film opening, that we should pay attention to font, colour etc, so it fits the apparent genre, and also the atmosphere, in order for our media product to look as professional as it possibly can be.

The Shining remake possible locations
For the remake of The Shining, we tried to scale down the original scenery and given the lack of resources, we had to improvise with similar aspects.
We chose a local reservoir to film our re-make because compared to the original, the two locations are similar.
We have possibilities to use this as one of the roads the car, within the opening, drives down. We have chosen this as a possibility because, as students, we cannot drive, so therefore we would have to use a toy car, and this mound of dirt could be used for the wooden area the car drives down.
We took our chosen toy car out to the locations to see if it the car could be pulled along the surface easily. As a group we believe this location could possibly be used when we film as the toy car was easily pulled along the dirt track. We would use this for the birds eye view shots used within the opening.
This is an likely possibility as our group decided that pulling the toy car along this stretch of land could prove difficult.
This was yet another idea for the lake shown at the opening of the title sequence, we have taken this into consideration as it contains a mound located near the middle of the lake, which matches that in the opening of 'The Shining'

The Shining timeline and storyboard.
Here is the timeline we created based on the film opening which we would need in order to maintain the correct timing with the original film's title sequence.
Here is our storyboard of the film opening which we will use as a guide when filming for the times of cuts and titles.

Why are we creating a chosen film opening?
As a group we have decided to re create the opening of the film 'The Shining' because it is a well known film and would allow us to gain an understanding of editing and using titles effectively when creating our own film opening. It will also help us to decide how, when we come to making our own 2 minute film opening, how we would want to show our titles, and if we would want to embed them, or show them on top of the film, as 'The Shining' portrays.
